Daniel J. Nowicki, “Wicki”, 91, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. Dan was born March 30, 1921 to John and Pearl (Koperski) Newman of Toledo, Ohio.
Dan was a retired butcher and he and his wife, Raphael, ran Nowicki’s Grocery on the corner of Buckingham and Junction for 27 years. Dan was later employed with the Zychowicz’s Sausage Factory. In his retirement years, Dan worked as a carryout person for Churchill’s Supermarket and took great pride interacting with and greeting the public.
Dan was a WWII war Veteran, having served in the U.S. Army and was actively deployed on D-Day on Normandy Beach and took part in the Battle of the Bulge. Dan was a Charter member of the Przybylski American Legion Post #642 and was a member of Logsdon Walla Post 639 Catholic War Veterans.
Dan loved the outdoors and his dogs, German Shorthair Pointers. He won numerous awards at field trials with his dogs and was a founding member of the Toledo Chapter of the National German Shorthair Kennel Club. Dan was a true outdoorsman; he enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and snow skiing. He was instrumental in creating a legacy of a family of snow skiers, all of his sons, grandchildren and now great grandchildren.
His loving wife, Raphael, preceded him in death in August of 1970. Dan later met Barbara Brand and she also preceded him in death. Surviving are his children Dale (Beth) of Rossford, OH, Dr. Dennis (Jan) of Mesa, AZ, and John (Paula) of Toledo. He was extremely proud of having three sons that were college graduates. Dan had seven grandchildren; Scott, Aimee (Orion), Rachel (Mike), Becky, Kevin, John and Steven and five great grandchildren: Jack, Nathan, Madison, Emily and Erinn.
Family and friends may visit Wednesday from 2-8 p.m. at the W.K. Sujkowski and Son Funeral Home, 3838 Airport Hwy., where CWV Post #639 will recite the Rosary at 6 p.m. and AL Post #642 will conduct services at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday beginning with prayers at the mortuary at 9:30am, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Hyacinth Catholic Church. Interment with military honors by the Lucas Co. Veterans Burial Corp will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Tributes in Dan’s memory may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
