James Jerome Szumigala, age 85, passed away in his sleep Thursday morning, June 18, 2015. He was born September 25, 1929, in Toledo OH, the son of Harry and Helen Szumigala. He attended Woodward High School (class of 1947), attended the University of Toledo Law School and graduated from Ohio State University, receiving his Bachelor of Science in Education in March 1952. He was a lifelong fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes’  football team.
Jim worked his summers and breaks from school at Harry’s Sports Bar, owned and operated by his parents. Jim began his career in business working at Dun & Bradstreet, Inc. He joined the staff of Ohio Plate Glass Company in 1956 and managed the accounts of the entire tristate regional credit department for over 30 years.  He also spent a several tax seasons working at H&R Block during evenings and weekends. Jim served as President of the Credit Association of Northwestern Ohio, and he was named the Credit Executive of the year in 1979 by the National Association of Credit Management. He worked at Ohio Plate until the company was sold out from under him, and was the last local employee to leave the building.
In his spare time, Jim loved collecting, polishing, and working with rocks. He spent most summer vacations traveling with his family to remote campgrounds across the country that offered opportunities to collect rocks and minerals.  He was a member of the Toledo Gem and Rockhound Club and spent many hours with his lapidary equipment in the basement “rock” room creating pieces of original jewelry for family and friends.
Jim traveled extensively, starting with these family camping trips across the country, and later in life, traveled with his wife, Anne, to destinations in Europe, Scandinavia, Egypt, Russia, Japan, and the Amazon jungle. Jim also became a “little, old winemaker” making gallons of wine in his basement to share with family and friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Helen, his sister, Virginia (Frank) Katafias, and his wife of 58 years, Anne, as well as his grandson, Nathan Morgan. Jim is survived by his children: Amy (Bob) Mohler, Houston TX; David (Ellen Daley) Szumigala, Fairbanks AK; Dale (Lisa) Szumigala, Colorado Springs, CO; Cathy (Michele Condie) Szumigala, Wellsville, UT; Sue (Richard) Morgan, Wauseon OH; grandchildren: Jeremy, Jonathan, and Jennifer Mohler; Matias, Antonio, and Nayeli Szumigala, Cassandra Szumigala, Tyce (Matt) Liston, Nichole (Jason) Heller, Jessica Morgan, and Christina (Jory) Schlatter; great-grandchildren: Isaiah, Ethan, Elijah, Isaac, and Ella Heller, and Micah Liston.
Friends and family may visit on Friday, June 26 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at W.K. Sujkowski & Sons Funeral Home, 3838 Airport Hwy., where the rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday June 27, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in Little Flower Catholic Church where visiting will begin at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, 5725 Hill Avenue. A reception will be held following interment at 12:00 at Maumee Eagles #2562, 2310 Detroit Avenue, Maumee OH 43537. Tributes in Jim’s name may be directed to the tuition assistance fund at St. Benedict (formerly Little Flower) School.
