Joseph D. Markowiak, age 97, passed away on Sunday February 21, 2016 at Heatherdowns Rehabilitation Center. Joseph was the son of George and Mary (Nowak) Markowiak and was born in Toledo on May 4, 1918. He worked 43 years for Bunting Brass & Bronze Co., retiring in 1980.  Joseph was a talented engineer, he taught himself using a correspondence course to obtain his degree with ITT Tech.  With this skill, not only did he apply it at his work place, he built many items including his home and boat and fixed many appliances.  Joseph enjoyed fishing, golfing, gardening and vacationing in the Upper Peninsula at Manistee Lake.  
   Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Joanne; 2 brothers and 7 sisters.  He is survived by his loving wife of 75 years Florence (Smolinski) Markowiak;  and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.  He was a true gentle man and will be dearly missed.
    Family and friends may visit Friday from 2-8 p.m. at the W. K. Sujkowski & Son Funeral Home, 3838 Airport Hwy., where scripture services will be held at 4:00p.m.  Funeral services will begin with prayers at the mortuary at 10 a.m. on Saturday February 27, 2016 followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. Hyacinth Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.  Memorial tributes may be directed to St. Hyacinth Church.
