Marvin R. “Smitty” Smith
5/2/33 – 3/10/16
Our family would like to celebrate the life of Marvin R Smith, an amazing husband, father, grandfather and brother.
“Smitty, as he was known to most, had a great sense of humor and was beloved by his family and friends.
Born in May of 1933, to Mary and Raymond Smith, “Smitty” attended St. Hyacinth and St. Agnes grade schools.  He went on to graduate from Central Catholic High School where he was a celebrated CYO basketball player earning a scholarship to BGSU.
As a young father, Marv coached grade school basketball. He retired from the US Post Office at the age of 55 and after several years, worked part time at the Toledo Museum of Art.  He supported his love for golf by working as a “starter” at the Fallen Timbers Golf Course.
Known for being an avid sportsman, Marv spent his early adult years playing competitive softball, eventually developing an addiction for golf. When he could no longer play the game, he enjoyed riding in the golf carts of his buddies and sharing” laughs” at the clubhouse.
Grandpa Marv was the number one fan of his grandchildren, supporting and cheering them on at all of their sporting events and even at “the ballet”. He was a very proud “gramps”.
Marvin and the love of his life, his sweetheart Shirley, were married for 61 wonderful years. They were married at St. Agnes Church in November, 1954.They shared their love and their children, Sheila DeLelles (Greg), Keith Smith, Sandra Garver (Pat), Shelly Williams (RC), grandchildren Tony DeLelles, Nique Johnston (Matt), Dustin DeLelles, Josh Smith (Christy), Jacob Smith( Megan ), Jordin Post and Roan Williams, 6 great grandchildren and brother Ron Smith.
Marv has gone on to join his parents, Raymond and Mary Smith, in-laws Lawrence and Irene Roan and great grandson Maguire Smith.
Shirley and her family would like to invite visitors to join them and honor Marv’s memory on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 from 4:00 – 8:00pm at the W. K. Sujkowski & Son Funeral Home, 3838 Airport Hwy.
A Mass will be held at 10:30am on Wednesday, 3/16/16 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church where visitation will begin after 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
Donations in Marvin’s name can be sent to: St. Joan of Arc Parish, Central Catholic High School or Hospice of NW Ohio.
