Leroy A. Hayes, age 94, of Maumee, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2018 with his faithful dog “Boo” and his loving family by his side.  He was born on January 19, 1924 to Clyde and Regina Hayes in Toledo.
Roy proudly volunteer at the age of 18 to serve his county for four years during WWII as a Navy Pilot.  After his honorable discharge, Roy earned his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Toledo.  He eventually became a successful builder and business owner.   Roy was a past member of the Home Builders Association and built Country Club Apartments in Oregon, OH.  He was also a member of American Legion Adams Twsp. Post 553.  Roy had a pilot’s license and took many trips with his Stearman Biplane, including Florida.  He also enjoyed being outdoors: mowing the grass, at the family lake house or simply riding on his golf cart with his dogs.  Roy cherished the time he spent with his family and he always had a generous heart, especially with his anonymous donations to families he read about in the Blade experiencing family tragedies.
He is survived by his wife Joan (Erwin); his children, Jill (David) Kosch, Jack (Julie Shivley), Jenny (Robert) Heier, Tina (Stephen) Miller and Julie (Jeff) Earnest; 7 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; sister, Virginia Eskra; and extended family and friends.  Roy was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Paul, Ken, Elsworth and Vincent.
In keeping with Roy’s wishes, there will be no services.  Memorial tributes may be directed to the Indiana Canine Assistant Network (www.icandog.org) which trains dogs for veteran with PTSD or Bright Focus Foundation (www.brightfocus.org/donate) researching cures for dementia and macular degeneration.

The Haye’s family. I have such fond memories of the lake house and all the great times up there. Roy was always fun host taking us for rides in his boat or letting us run around on the jet skis. Thanks for allowing us to be a part of his life. Cuyler always enjoyed the many conversations with Roy and we both enjoyed his crazy sense of humor. Our condolences to those missing him today.

From a grainy polaroid the hand of my grandfather
Reaches, carpenter's knuckle with love knotted,
By love taps playing with me to the stature of his Truth.
Like him it rests in peace on my shoulder,
Which struggles to bear the weight.
