Donald R. Wenz, 86, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, January 22, 2021. He was born on December 18, 1934 to Oscar L. and Marie M. (Hofmann) Wenz. At an early age, Donald and his brother, Glenn, worked along with their father and mother at their vegetable truck gardening business on Wenz Rd. He worked there during grade school and while he attended Libbey High School, where he graduated in 1952. Donald continued to work at the family business as his brother, Glenn, was drafted into the U.S. Army. After Glenn was honorably discharged, Donald enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard. He continued to work as a young farmer/greenhouse owner. While Donald was delivering flowers to a local Red and White grocery store, the owner asked him if he was dating anyone. Donald replied that he really was not, so the owner told him that he had a very nice sister-in-law. Donald agreed to a blind date and met Dolores Becker. Donald and Dolores dated for a while and after a few years decided to get married. When Donald’s service in the U.S. Army National Guard was completed in 1963, they became husband and wife on November 9, 1963 at Bethel Lutheran Church. They started a family and had two wonderful children, Kathy Marie and Jeffery Donald. Later in life, after the family was grown, Dolores assisted Donald in the family business. Donald and Glenn’s business eventually progressed to the bedding plant industry and supplied area farmers with vegetable plants and farm markets with flowers. Donald and Glenn began to purchase local greenhouse parts and structures that would go out of business. Those materials were used to expand their business into what is now a 6-acre bedding plant greenhouse operation in south Toledo, Wenz Brothers Farm, LTD. Donald was currently still working and advising his daughter and son at the family business.
Donald assisted his wife, Dolores, yearly at the Lucas County Junior Fair Gardening Division by assembling a display for her that was used during the annual Lucas County Fair.
Donald was a member of various organizations through the years including Maumee Valley Growers (formerly Toledo Area Flower and Vegetable Growers), Ohio Florist Association, Metro Detroit Flower Growers Association, Farmer’s Market Association of Toledo, Western Lake Erie Model ‘A’ Restorers Club, and Lucas County Agricultural Society.

Donald was preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 ½ years, Dolores; his brother Glenn (Janet) Wenz; and brother-in-law, Donald (Pat) Becker; and brother-in-law, Gerald Walsh. He is survived by his children, Kathy Wenz and Jeffery Wenz; daughter-in-law, Jill Sujkowski; his two handsome grandsons, Jack and James Wenz; sister-in-law, Virginia Walsh; niece, Diana (Dennis) Schroeder; and by extended family and friends.
Visitation with social distancing will be held on Wednesday from 4-8:00 p.m. and Thursday from 3-8:00 p.m. at the W.K. Sujkowski & Son Funeral Home, 3838 Airport Hwy.  Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 29, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home.  Interment will follow at Elliston Cemetery.  Memorial tributes may be directed to Bethel Lutheran Church Unified Fund or the Lucas County Jr. Fair Gardening Division.
