Phillip Thomas Lewandowski of Toledo passed peacefully in his home on February 8, 2021, surrounded by family.  Born April 28, 1946, he grew up on Streicher Street in the Polish Village, attended St. Adalbert’s grade school, and graduated from Woodward High School in 1964.  He also attended The University of Toledo.
Phil worked for Owen-Illinois (O-I NEG) for 35 years under numerous engineering titles.  He was an avid golfer and enjoyed building golf clubs and organizing the O-I golf league until his retirement in 2000.  He was a self-taught, skilled craftsman who could design, build, and fix practically anything, like a summer deck, a privacy fence, or a sandbox for his first grandson.  In recent years, he enjoyed sitting in his flower garden waiting for hummingbirds, hanging around the house with his pet bulldog, Clementine, and watching his beloved Detroit Tigers.  Known by those closest to him as “P-Dogg,” Phil was admired for his sharp mind, quick wit, and colorful language.  He always knew what he wanted, making him both stubborn and demanding, but these traits were tempered by his dry humor and generous heart.  He was a doting Papa, never missing an opportunity to shower his grandchildren with affection and gifts.
Phil is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Evelyn, and survived by his brothers, Gerald and David; his devoted wife of 54 years, Terri; his five children, Gary (Holly), Doug (Angie), Lesley (Jay) Madrzykowski, Andy (Jessica), and Emily (Gordon) Bumpus; 12 beautiful grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
A private memorial ceremony will be held later this year to celebrate Phil’s life.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (www2.jdrf.org) or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org). The family would like to thank the team at DaVita Kidney Care, particularly Erica, Nikki, Les, and Dr. Ratnam, for their compassionate care and unwavering support over the last four years.
Dad, as you wished for us, may the Lord bless you and keep you in His loving arms.  We love and miss you.

Terri and family,
I want to wish you my sympathy in the passing of Phil. I am not used to calling either of you by your first names, even as an adult. I remember when I found out that I was a diabetic back in 1980 and sitting down to talk to Phil. It made me happy knowing that I had someone older to talk to about it other than my own parents and lay out my feelings of being diagnosed as a Type 1 Juvenile Diabetic. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. May God comfort you all in your time of loss.
