Thomas A. Nortz, 73, passed away on June 20, 2012. He was born on January 17, 1939 to Benjamin and Margaret (Eischen) Nortz. Tom was a graduate of Central Catholic High School and the University of Toledo. In 1961 he served in the Army in Germany. Tom and his wife, Dottie Leonhardt were married in 1967 and celebrated almost 45 years of marriage.
During his forty-one year career with Owens-Illinois in the Glass Container Division, Tom was a mechanical engineer and production manager in the Waco, TX and New Orleans, LA glass plants. As a consultant, two wonderful years were later spent in Milan, Italy, where the family traveled extensively. Upon his return to the USA, Tom traveled all over the world as a project engineer.
Besides being an avid reader and gardener, Tom was an excellent cook. Other pastimes were building model ships, fishing and playing golf with his buddies. Tom was an oil and watercolor artist. After retiring he and Dottie continued to travel, and he would take photographs of their adventures from which he would paint. His specialty was lighthouses and waterscapes from his favorite beach destinations, especially Sanibel Island. He enjoyed the Sylvania Senior Center Friday art group and was a member of the Toledo Artists’ Club and had served on their Trustees’ Board.
Tom was a man of integrity and a good friend with a sense of humor just like his martinis – extra dry! He was also a very brave man enduring more than most people could imagine. Tom will be dearly missed by family and friends.
Tom is survived by his loving wife, Dottie; and daughter, Kristin; brothers, Michael (Soni) Nortz, Sylvania and James, Toledo; sister, Ann Marie (David) Satterthwaite, Maumee; aunt, Virginia Eischen; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends beginning at 9:30am at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 6149 Hill Ave., on Saturday, June 30, 2012, with a Funeral Mass at 10:30 am. Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospitality Kitchen, the Toledo Library Legacy Foundation or to the Toledo Artists’ Club – Student Scholarship Fund.
