We are celebrating the life of Rita Margaret Polaski, age 94, who passed away on Monday, January 29, 2018, at Ebeid Hospice surrounded by her loving family.  The oldest daughter of Peter and Joan (Zoldowski) Tafelski, she was born January 25, 1924 in Toledo.  She attended Libbey High School.  Rita married the love of her life, Marty Polaski, on Valentine’s Day, in 1942 at Holy Family Church near Fort Benning, in Columbus, Georgia.  During World War II she was proud to work various assembly lines at Dura Corporation and Auto Light aiding the war effort.  She owned and operated El-Rita’s Flower Shop with her life long friend Eleanor Cuttaia during the 1960’s.  After they sold the shop to Ken’s Flowers, she worked 20 years at Cook’s Department Store (Ontario’s), retiring in 1985.  Rita followed Notre Dame football and cheered for her beloved team whether on TV or radio.  In her later years, she faithfully followed the Detroit Tigers with her daughter Mary.  She had an abiding love of flowers as witnessed by her large out door gardens all of her life.
Rita is survived and loved by daughter Shirley (Jim) Sumner; son-in-law Steve Horoszewski; daughter-in-law Sharon Polaski; granddaughters, Tracy (Matt), Holly (Noal) and Niki (Jeff); great grandsons James, Gabriel, and Jack who lovingly called her Gigi; sister Cathy Knakiewicz; nephew Mike Small; special cousins Jack, Helen and Virgie; a host of very special Polaski nieces and nephews along with her loving extended family of Karen, Kathy, Kris and Karla.
In addition to her parents, Rita was preceded in death by her son Jim; daughter Mary Sue; sister Ruth; and her husband Marty, who she has missed every day for the last 33 years.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Sunday from 2-7:00 p.m. at the W.K. Sujkowski & Son Funeral Home, 3838 Airport Hwy.  Funeral Services will be held on Monday, February 5, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home.  Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.  Those planning an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, are asked to consider the Shanon Wise Marks Memorial Scholarship at BGSU (for details on donations, please contact the funeral home at 419-385-5305).   Messages of condolences may be made at www.sujkowskiairport.com.
The angel came and said it was time; don’t worry Mom, I will be fine.  You have taught me well and did your best; now it’s time for you to rest.  It broke my heart to lose you, but you did not go alone. For part of me went with you, the day God called you home.

You always brightened our day. There is no way these flowers can compare to the beauty you brought to this world. Save some seats for us.

As I watched my sweet mother fade away from this life, telling her how much I loved her and saying goodbye ... other eyes were watching her coming and excitedly saying “here she comes”. I love you to the moon and back Mom! ..... Shirley

Dear Shirley and Jim,
It was an honor to know Rita. She brought the gifts of kindness and concern for others every day to the table. There is a special place for her in heaven as well as in my heart.
